This exciting new event at Lapham Peak State Park in Delafield, Wisconsin is called Bergkönig, which means “Mountain King” in German. The race will run from the Evergreen Shelter to the top of the Lapham Peak tower and back down. For those of you who are not familiar with the park, the course involves numerous hill climbs, technical sections, and flights of stairs. The race should be very challenging for the veteran trail racer, yet fun and exciting for the recreational trail runner.
All proceeds from the event will go towards the Adopt an Athlete Program, started by the Central Cross Country Ski Association (a 501(c)3 not for profit corporation) to support opportunities for talented athletes to pursue athletic excellence in the Winter Olympic Games. This inaugural year of Bergkönig will raise funds to help support Maria Stuber, Waukesha Native, CXC Team Vertical Limit member and 2009 U.S. National Championships Silver medalist as she trains and races full-time for the 2010 ski season. Maria, will be present at the event to help with timing and greet race participants, as well as answer questions about her training and goals for next season.
“I cannot even begin to explain how excited I am to be a part of this event. Bergkönig is MUCH more than just another running race. Development of cross-country skiing in the United States depends on athlete support at the community level. I have spent countless hours running and ski training on the Lapham Peak trails and it means the world to me to have this event there. Without the wonderful support that I have received from the Waukesha and Milwaukee communities, I would not be able to continue pursuing my Olympic dreams. Thank you all very very much!”
– Maria Stuber
