The CXC team met in Hayward, WI for our fourth camp of the 2008/2009 ski season. The camp was 11 days long and the first week consisted of mostly high intensity workouts. The format of this “intensity block” was very similar to the format of our July camp “intensity block” and we were able to use the workouts to gauge our progress. The week consisted of 3 time trials, 2 intervals sessions and 3 strength workouts with a little distance training scattered throughout.

On the first day, we did the infamous OO skate time trial. This time trial starts in downtown Seeley, WI and heads up County Road OO to the Birkie trail crossing. The course distance is about 5 Kilometers and it is mostly all uphill. Camp started out pretty rough for me. On the way back down OO road (after the time trial) I had a major crash on the big hill. My roller ski bindings are very old and the bumpiness of the road caused the left one to vibrate open. I had enough time to recognize that I was going to go down and I managed to fall onto by back. I hit Toko water belt first and then slid a little ways on my right shoulder. Considering how fast I was going, I came out of the fall looking great. Unfortunately, I had some very painful road rash and a little whip lash to deal with during our week of hard training.
On Friday morning, the CXC Elite Women’s team stopped in at a Ski and Tea workout to introduce ourselves and meet some of the local women who are just as into fitness and skiing as we are. Ski and Tea is a new (and fast growing) women’s specific training group that was started by two powerhouse endurance athletes in the Hayward, WI area– Julie Lynch and Linda Cook. The wonderful women of Ski and Tea are able to balance friends, family, careers, health and ski training. They get together once a week to sweat out a hard workout and they always have a great time. For more information you can check out the article in “The Trail Blazer” magazine published July, 2008 (trail-blazer-article-ski-and-tea-3). These enthusiastic women have offered to help the CXC Women’s Elite team financially by inviting us to host a series of ski clinics for Ski and Tea this Fall and Winter. I am extremely excited about this partnership and I look forward to spending more time with the inspirational women of Ski and Tea.
